Nanny of the week- Nanny Extraordinaire

Our Nanny of the Week- Our Featured Nanny is Sharon Garrett

I’m very excited to announce our new venture; our weekly nanny extraordinaire which features nannies that are making a difference in the nanny community, on their jobs and their external communities. We are highlighting their achievements, their unique stories and the nanny journey that have allowed them to become extraordinary nannies.

This week’s extraordinary nanny is Sharon Garrett, an adept nanny with over fourteen years of experience as a professional caregiver. Her professional nanny background includes caring for multiple children, infants and older kids. She was very excited to talk to us about the nanny profession. Help us at My Nanny Circle celebrate Sharon Garrett’s achievements.

What makes you a “Nanny Extraordinaire”?

I believe that because of my sincere love for children and always placing their needs first, I have been able to be a successful caregiver. My track record with the families that have employed me, solidifies that also. I’ve always treated the children I care for like they were own. I respect them, their parents and their household. There was complete trust between myself and family. Time management was very important within the household and that worked out perfectly for myself and the parents.

 What is your Nanny Story?

I’m originally from the Caribbean and I found out very quickly after my arrival here, that being a nanny was in fact one of the fastest jobs one could find in the New York area, at that time. However, after working as a nanny, I developed a further love for children and was able to have many successful years working as a nanny. I continue to serve as a Professional Nanny and also own a small business in Brooklyn, New York.

How do you make a difference in the nanny community?

I try to give good advice to my peers and encourage them to steer in the right direction. I also use whatever opportunity that I get to encourage other caregivers, to equip themselves with the necessary tools, needed to remain competitive in the industry; tools such as training and continuing educational opportunities.

What are your thoughts about the nanny profession?

Nannies must remember to work hand-in-hands with the parents which ultimately benefit the child/children. This is especially true as some nannies may spend more time with the children because of the parents work schedule for example and therefore cohesiveness of actions within the household is important. Each child is different and personally I’ve learnt a lot from them, in as much as I’ve taught them. That makes the job interesting and easier.

What is the most valuable lesson learned while working as a nanny?

Always have a written contract. Have a meeting with the parents once in a while making sure that all is well. During the first year of the child’s life write down all foods that you give that child. This makes doctor’s visits easier because most Pediatricians will ask about the foods that a child eat. Also ensure that you are using good products as this will making your job as a nanny easier and feel free to recommend them to the parents. Caring for babies in diapers I always recommend the Huggies® brand; A & D Ointment.

What advice do you have for nannies that are new to the profession?

Sit and discuss everything concerning the child with the parents. Be respectable to others to gain respect from them. Always be on time. Dress appropriately.

Tell us the one thing that people need to know about nannies?

We are hard workers and need to be looked at as the professionals that we are and not looked down upon. Nannies make a valuable contribution to the American society.

Once out of the nanny role what activities do you engage in and can’t do without?

I believe that we are called to help others and therefore I get involved in fundraising activities for my country and also my church.

How do you define wholesome living?

Making yourself happy whilst helping others who are less fortunate. Always try to be there for friends. Never forget where you were and have a vision as to where you want to be tomorrow and beyond.

How do you mange stress in your life?

I seek the help of my maker and spend time praying. Good therapy!

  2. First off it is good to see a blog about nannies and one that highlights the great jobs that nannies do. Too long it their position has been taken for granted despite the fact that the “hand that rocks the cradle rules the world” and that is exactly what these nannies are doing.
I am happy to see Sharon being featured on here. I know her personally and I know the great work she has done with her charge and how much the child she takes care of loves her. She is not only a mother to her children, nor her charge but she also take care of children in her island of St. Lucia and those she comes in contact with who needs her help.
Congratulation Sharon…you deserve this and many more awards for your outstanding work with the future citizens of our world.

    Miss O
